Normally we stay at various Intercontinental hotels during most of our travels, but for this visit to Kuala Lumpur, we decided to try something different and stayed at the Sheraton Imperial hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

There is a monorail line just outside the Sheraton, and I wanted to give it a try.

The KL Monorail system consists of only 11 stations on about 5 miles of tracks. It started running in 2003, and has lost a massive amount of money, as well as being criticized for not integrated into the overall Kuala Lumpur transportation system.

I originally wanted to use it to visit the KLCC and Petronas Towers during our stay at the Sheraton Imperial, but was told that the stations are quite far from my destination, and is not a good option.

The Monorail stations are elevated, and typically only have elevators going in one direction, and not really designed for handicap access.
I think there are ticketing machines, but most people seem to purchase their tickets from the agent.
With 11 stations and one line, only a limited area is served by the Monorail.
The system connects the Kuala Lumpur Sentral transport hub with the 'Golden Triangle' along the southeast and northeast area of Kuala Lumpur.
A single journey ticket cost RM 1.20, about $0.35. While it is inexpensive for western standards, the monorail fare is actually the most expensive amongst other Kuala Lumpur mass transportation choices.
Tickets are reused, and with commercial advertising on the back.
The platforms for opposite directions of travel are interconnected, and passengers could go back and forth, giving it a bit of a joy-ride reputation.
Not a lot of signage were posted, but with a similar route, it is easy to figure things out.
Even though the system is only a few years old, it gives off a feeling that it has not age well, especially the station infrastructure.
All of the current rolling stock are two car setup, and the stations are significantly longer than the trains. This make it look like there are very few passengers on the platforms.
View of the Petronas towers in the distance while waiting for the next monorail train.
